Looking for the perfect spot for your next tattoo?

While the little area of skin behind your ear might not be the first place that comes to mind, there are some definite perks to this flattering and unusual area. This is likely why behind the ear tattoos have been consistently gaining steam amongst the tattoo community in recent years.

For tattoo newbies, the idea of getting a tattoo in such a sensitive area may seem a little intimidating. So we’ve compiled some of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to behind the ear tattoos to help you decide if this spot is the perfect place for your next piece of art.

Why choose a behind the ear tattoo?

Not only can behind the ear tattoos be absolutely stunning, but they are also a discreet way to let a little of your personality shine. If you have longer hair, hiding your new tattoo is as easy as letting your hair down. On the other hand, when you’re ready to show off your ink just style your hair accordingly.

Do behind the ear tattoos hurt?

Just about any tattoo is going to hurt on some level. How extreme the pain will be for your tattoo will greatly depend on your own personal threshold for pain.

That being said, there are some factors to consider when deciding on a behind the ear tattoo. The first thing to note is that the area behind the ear consists of a thin layer of skin resting directly on top of the skull bone. Since there is no padding to absorb the shock of the tattoo machine’s vibrations, you’re going to feel those vibrations throughout your skull. This can be an unpleasant sensation for some.

The bright side is that behind the ear tattoos tend to be small, so while it may be painful you won’t have to endure the pain too terribly long. You may also be able to request a numbing agent from your artist if you’re really worried about the pain. This won’t stop the intensity of the vibrations though.

How should I care for my behind the ear tattoo?

Any new tattoo is most vulnerable to damage during the healing process. Since your new ink is now a permanent addition to your body, it makes sense to give it the utmost care during this crucial time. In order to assure your tattoo heals beautifully, follow this important tattoo aftercare routine until your behind the ear tattoo is fully healed.

Right after getting inked, your artist will usually cover your new tattoo with plastic wrap or a bandage. Your tattoo artist will tell you how long you should keep that bandage on as it can vary for different tattoos.

Once you’re ready to remove the bandage, gently wash the tattoo using fragrance-free soap. Your tattoo artist can recommend a good brand if you’re unsure what to use. After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry using a clean towel. Never rub the tattoo to dry it.

After your tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or tattoo aftercare balm to your tattoo. Repeat the process of washing and applying lotion at least two times per day.
Eventually, your tattoo may start to scab or peel. This is normal, just try your best not to mess with it and never pick at the scabs.

It usually takes 2 to 4 weeks for your tattoo to stop scabbing. You will also want to avoid swimming and sun exposure to the tattoo area during the healing process. Additionally, because of the placement of behind the ear tattoos, be careful not to get any hair products on the tattoo while it’s healing as they could irritate the skin.
