Location

A Monroe piercing is a lip piercing placed to the left of the upper lip.

Popularity of Monroe Piercings

This style of piercing has been made popular due to the iconic actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe as the style piercing replicates her iconic birthmark to the side of her upper lip. Model Cindy Crawford also adorns the same birthmark earning her spot in the colloquial naming of the piercing. If the piercing is located on the alternate side, it is then commonly referred to as a “Madonna” piercing.

Healing Process

A typical Monroe piercing will heal from 3 to 4 months depending naturally on the rate of speed each individual heals. Like any other piercing, it will only be made quicker if you are carefully following the aftercare advice and a higher jewelry quality was chosen. Being indirect, and reducing friction is very important, however, if you are in a position where you need to touch the piercing, your hands and the area around the piercing should be thoroughly cleaned beforehand.

Changing Jewelry

As with many other piercings, is not recommended to remove the jewelry for extended periods of time. If you are unsure of how to change the jewelry, or if the piercing is adequately healed, it’s best to consult with your piercer. Only when your piercing is completely healed and you are comfortable manipulating the jewelry, should you consider changing the jewelry by yourself. Typically, the initial Jewellery can be changed after 4 to 6 weeks.
