The scrumper piercing is made through the upper frenulum which is a small fold of tissue of the upper lip and connects to the middle of the upper gums. It has earned the alternate name of a smiley piercing as the jewelry usually is only seen when the wearer smiles or has a wide a grin on their face.
Commonly this style of piercing will be done using circular barbells (horseshoe), curved barbells, and captive bead rings. With any new piercing, it is not recommended to remove the jewelry for extended periods of time. If you are unsure of how to change the jewelry, or if the piercing is adequately healed, it’s best to consult with your piercer. Only when your scrumper piercing is completely healed, and you are comfortable manipulating the jewelry, should you consider changing the jewelry by yourself. Typically, the initial jewelry can be removed after 4 to 6 weeks.
Generally, a scrumper or smiley piercing will take roughly 2 to 3 months to completely heal depending naturally on how fast each individual heals. Carefully following aftercare, proper placement, and jewelry quality can help reduce healing times (however some bodies naturally will heal at different rates). Being indirect, and reducing friction is crucial, however, if you are in a position where you need to touch the piercing, your hands and the area around the piercing should be thoroughly cleaned beforehand.
Caring for your Scrumper Piercing
Our piercers will always give you appropriate aftercare advice that has been tailored specifically to the placement of your new piercing. It’s important that you follow the advice given by our piercing professionals as improper care can lead to the new piercing eventually becoming rejected by the body or other irritations and infections could take effect.
